familiar with all factors, external and internal, that make up
Jewish experience; above all, they must be able to grasp the
essential oneness of Jews with the rest of mankind. At the same
time gentile authors must recognize the Jews’ spiritual unique-
ness which is their glory and despair. Then tellers of tales will
create Jewish characters that might well find an honorable place
among the creations of world literature.
