Ahad Ha-Am
(pseudonym of Asher Ginzberg). 100th anniver-
sary of birth. Born in Skwira, Russia, August 5, 1856. Died in
Tel Aviv, January 2, 1927. He was a Hebrew essayist and creator
of the idea of Palestine as a Jewish spiritual center. He was editor
of
Hashiloah
, a Hebrew monthly magazine. His major Hebrew
works are
A t the Parting of the Ways, Judaism and the Gospels
and
Letters of Ahad Ha-Am.

Ben-Gurion. 70th anniversary of birth. Born in
Plonsk, Poland, October 16, 1886. He was the first Prime Minister
and is now Defense Minister of the Israel Government. He is an
agricultural laborer, statesman and author. He has written numer-
ous works on Palestine and Israel, Zionism and labor, both in
Hebrew and Yiddish.

70th anniversary of birth. Born in
Slutzk, Russia, October 15, 1885; now living in Israel. He is a
master of prose in both Hebrew and Yiddish and translated into
Hebrew the works of his father-in-law Sholem Aleichem and
dramatized some of them for the Yiddish stage.

Brody, November 20th, 1805. Died in Lemberg, Poland, October
12, 1855. He was rabbi in Zolkiev. He was a pioneer of scientific
study of the Talmud and the spiritual development of Judaism.
His writings, dealing with literary history and Talmudic studies,
are embodied in several significant volumes.

He was an
active physician in Poland and Germany and served as rabbi in
Amsterdam, Holland. He visited many countries seeking new
books for his extensive library. He wrote numerous scientific and
philosophical works.
