us how he finds Jews portrayed in current American fiction. A
distinguished scholar, whose writings on Judaism have received
world-wide distribution through UNESCO, Dr. Leon Roth, sur-

This, then, is the annual record and compilation of special
articles. Book-lovers and students of Jewish literature surely join
us of the Council in expressing gratitude to those who helped bring
this record to light, particularly, the Lucius N. Littauer Founda-
tion, the Gustav Wurzweiler Foundation, Inc., the national
organizations affiliated with the Jewish Book Council of America,
and our sponsor, the National Jewish Welfare Board. We are
also indebted to many individuals; among them are, Hayyim
Bass, Dr. Mortimer J. Cohen, Solomon Kerstein, Leo W. Schwarz,
Dr. Mordecai Soltes and the late L. M. Stein. We acknowledge
with warm appreciation the services of our distinguished editor,
Dr. Alexander Alan Steinbach, and his associates, Dr. Menahem
G. Glenn and Rabbi I. Edward Kiev.
May the Jewish word never depart from our lips. May the
Jewish book ever enlighten our eyes and render Jewish life more
fruitful and more significant.
