representative publications — is only to serve as articles in a

A report on book publishing in Israel, issued by the Public Infor-
mation Office, states that more than 1,000 titles were published by
Israel firms (numbering about 60) during the Jewish year 5715.
1£200,000 worth of books were exported. Of all books published,
about 75% were original Hebrew works and 25% translations.
This listing mentions some of the most representative books in
the latter category.
An average novel sells between 2,000 and 2,500 copies — a sale
of 6,000 copies stamps a book as a “ best-seller.” We must reckon
with the fact that the book-market is very limited, since the total
population of Israel is a little over one and three-quarters million,
of whom more than half have come to the country during the past
few years. However, one must record with ecstatic amazement
that some books have a high selling mark. The
Hebrew Ency-
clopedia
, for example — and there are various encyclopedias — has
about 40,000 subscribers. Hebrew classics, modern and old, have
reached many editions totalling tens of thousands of copies. The
Bible, we should record, still tops all sales of Hebrew publications
here and abroad. Much is also done in the field of books dealing
with the Bible as well as with exegetic works.
We note that 25% of the recently published books were works
of fiction, about 150 original novels and 100 translations. We
can still boast of being
Am ha-Sefer.
For the items listed here, the compiler is greatly indebted to

a must and a veritable treasure for any book lover or bibliographer.
They mirror the condition of the book-market in Israel.
