to be compared with the man who reads it for the hundred and
oneth. G.K.C. was certainly right when he said that the Iliad is
great because life is a fight, the Odyssey because life is a journey,
the Book of Job because life is a riddle. But the prosaic statement
of Mr. E. M. Forster is to the point even more: “Books have to be
read (worse luck, for it takes a long time); it is the only way of
discovering what they contain.”
