growing desire to enrich American Jewish life with the precious
moral and religious ingredients Kasrilevke possessed alongside
much archaic dross. These precious ingredients survive in the
works of Sholom Aleichem and are being made available to us
in fine translations, adaptations and imitations.
Sholom Aleichem’s influence is being felt on the centenary of
his birth. He still moves us to laughter and to tears. He still
speaks to us of eternal Jewish values. We would do well to
continue to ponder him long and often.
