in this great output. Obviously, even if I attempted to record
merely their titles, I should require ten times the space at my
disposal.
The bibliographer, while performing his task, is like the agent
of a great department store who carries only a few samples in
his portfolio or shows descriptive catalogues of his wares. Whoever
views the samples or reads the catalogues can at best only imagine
what merchandise he may procure from the store.
Likewise, one can only estimate from this much too abbreviated
list the wealth of the literary production in Israel and the wide
variety of subjects it encompasses. Noteworthy is its up-to-
dateness in translated works. No best seller in any literature,
or in any country, is long delayed in appearing in Hebrew garb
in Israel.
Special mention must be made of a number of substantial
reference works, such as the
Bibl ical Encyclopedia,
the
Hebrew
Encyclopedia
and the
Ta lmud ic Encyclopedia.
One should also
note the publication in Israel of books written by American-
Jewish authors. This demonstrates the cultural interdependence
between the Diaspora and Israel. Hebrew literary creativity is
not inhibited by geographical boundaries; Hebrew literature is
universal. Jews the world over collaborate in its creation, de-
velopment and perpetuation.
