Harry Kovner Memorial Poetry Awards
The Harry Kovner Memorial Poetry Awards, each valued at
$100
plus a citation, were presented to authors of published
volumes of Jewish poetry in Hebrew and in Yiddish. The red-
pients were: I. J. Schwartz for his cumulative contributions to
Yiddish poetry and Aaron Zeitlin for his volume of Hebrew
poetry,
Bein Ha-Esh Veha-Yesha
(Yavneh, Tel Aviv). The judges
for the awards were: Ephraim Auerbach, New York; H. Bass,
New York; Moshe Starkman, New York; Dr. Milton Arfa, New
York; Dr. Jacob Kabakoff, Cleveland; Prof. Shalom Spiegel,
New York.
Annual Meet ing
The Annual Meeting of the Council was held on May 14,
1958, in the auditorium of the Atran Center for Jewish Culture,
New York City. Dr. Bernard J. Bamberger presided. Solomon
Kerstein, chairman of the annual meeting committee, presented
resolutions in memory of the following bookmen who had been
actively associated with the work of the Council: Dr. Joshua
Bloch, Dr. Pinkhos Churgin, Elma Ehrlich Levinger, Dr. Philip
L. Seman and Dr. Mordecai Soltes.
The annual literary awards were presented by Samuel H.
Daroff, Bernard Kovner, Milton Kovner and Mrs. Clara Leff.
Dr. I. Edward Kiev presented the library citations.
Dr. Sol Liptzin, on behalf of the Council, presented to Miss
Fanny Goldstein a special citation upon her retirement as
librarian of the West End Branch and curator of Judaica of
the Boston Public Library.
Dr. Solomon Grayzel, chairman of the nominations committee,
presented a report that was duly adopted. The following were
elected as officers of the Council:
