17, 1936. Hebrew jou rna list and Zionist statesman, he wa
editor of
Ha-Tsefirah,
a Hebrew newspaper, for which he wrote
many feuilletons. He also wrote on Zionism in German and
English. T h e depth of his learning and his keen perception
combined to give his Hebrew writings a special attractiveness.

Russia, October 1, 1817, died there December 14, 1885. A T a l ­
mudist who also had acquired modern learning, he collected a
magnificent private library for which he compiled a catalogue.

Although she is best known as the founder of Hadassah, the
Women’s Zionist Organization o f America, she rendered ou t­
standing service to American Jew ish literature as secretary of
the Literary Committee of the Jew ish Pub lication Society of
America. She translated into English

Brooklyn, N. Y., he has contributed several volumes to the

the last few years.

Bialystok, Russia, December 15, 1859, died in Warsaw, April 14,
1917. Founder of the universal Esperanto language, which was
intended to simplify communication between people speaking
different languages, he translated many classics into Esperanto
and published also an Esperanto text-book in Hebrew.
