of shrewd observation unique to Hebrew literature.

April 22, 1885. Expert on Jewish art, he directed the Jewish
museums in Berlin and Tel-Aviv and wrote many studies in his
field in German, Hebrew and English.

Prominent L ibera l rabb i in Frankfurt on the Main until his
immigration to England in 1938, he edited a L iberal prayerbook

Judaism.

chen, Moravia, Austria-Hungary, now Czechoslovakia, Nov. 10,
1859, died in New York, February, 1939. His outstanding contri­
bution was his editorship of
T h e Jewish Encyclopedia,

the best reference work on Jews and Judaism yet published. He
also wrote extensively books in German, French and English
against anti-Semitism.

Born in Bialystok, Poland, March 10, 1810, died in Warsaw,
May 15, 1904. A Hebraist, mathematician and astronomer, he
wrote numerous works in Hebrew on science and also on the
Jewish calendar.

October 9, 1884. Dean and professor emeritus of philosophy at
the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion in New
York, he has stimulated several generations of rabbis through
his teachings.
