var, Austria-Hungary, about 1800, died there July 30, 1886. A
rabbi in his native city, he published numerous works on Halacha,
the most popular of which is the
K izur Shulhan Aruck,
an
abridgement of the classic code of Joseph Caro, which was re-
printed many times and also translated into English.
Nathan M ichael Gelber. 70th birthday. Born in Lemberg,
Galicia, May 27,
1891.
Now living in Israel, his field of study has
been the history of the Jews in Poland and of Zionism. His major
works have appeared in German and Hebrew, although some
articles have also been published in English.

March 1, 1891. Master of University College, Oxford University,
England, and an eminent British legal authority, he has also
been interested in the Jewish contribution to jurisprudence, as

Born in Manchester, England, October 13, 1862, died in New
York, May 22, 1936. Professor of Semitic Languages at Columbia
University, he edited the
Sem itic Study Series
of his university.
He wrote on contemporary Jewish affairs, also on
Zionism
, the
first extensive treatment of that subject in English. He also was
editor of the department of post-Biblical history and post-
Talmudic literature of the
Jewish Encyclopedia.

Gutheim. 75th anniversary of death. Born in
Westphalia, Germany, November 5, 1817, died in New Orleans,
June 11, 1886. For many years he was Reform rabbi in New Or-
leans. He wrote almost all the hymns for the Merzbacher prayer-
book, a Reform liturgy used at Temple Emanu-El in New York,
published a collection of his sermons, and translated into Eng-
lish the fourth volume of Graetz’
H istory of the Jews.

50th anniversary of death. Born in Loslau,
Germany, November 10, 1826, died in Strelitz, Mecklenburg, Ger-
many, November 10, 1911. Chief rabbi of Mecklenburg-Strelitz for
many years, his major work is his
Real-Enzyklopadie des Juden-
turns
, a pioneer effort to compile Biblical and Talmudic knowl-
edge in dictionary form.
