and to sixty in 1948, when all Jewish creative efforts were forcibly
terminated. From 1948 through 1965, a period of seventeen years,
only thirteen Yiddish books were published in the USSR. I t is
impo rtan t to note tha t the first of these books was issued in 1959,
indicating tha t during the years 1948 to 1959—thus including the
six years after Stalin’s dea th—Yiddish books were p roh ib ited in
the Soviet Union. A list of the published books follows:
