in Mitau, Russia, in 1812, died there August 16, 1868. He taught
in the school headed by Max Lilienthal in Riga and later served
as the government’s Hebrew interpreter in Mitau. His works,
all in German, deal with Biblical and Talmudic medicine and
with the history of the Jews in Livonia and Courland, his home
province.

Russian socialist, whose major work appeared in Yiddish,
he
was for nearly 30 years on the staff of the
Jewish Day

York. In his ideology he was closest to the Bund, opposing Zion-
ism, yet demanding Jewish cultural autonomy in the diaspora.

Germany, in 1829, died in Cincinnati, December 17, 1893. Teacher
and rabbi in Europe and America, he finally became professor
at the Hebrew Union College in Cincinnati. His chief work is
Isaak Markus Jost und seine Freunde,
about the historian Jost,
the forerunner of Graetz.

25th anniversary of death. Born in Bor-
chestowa, Germany, died in Palestine, December 26, 1943. An
early Zionist who settled in Palestine as a physician in 1921, he
devoted his literary interest to the forerunner of Zionism, Moses
Hess, publishing a biography, which was also translated into
Hebrew, as well as editing his major writings.

has been teaching in Palestine since 1926. As one of the out-
standing Israeli educators, he has published many books on edu-
cation and text-books, also some works on Israeli art.
