were responsible for calling the attention of Jewish schools to
the values inherent in this annual rededication to Jewish learn-
ing. Its impact on Jewish schools is evident from the report

and U.Z. Engelman (1959), which indicated that Jewish Book
Month scored highest among the teaching aids used for stimu-
lating the use of the school library.
Public libraries, especially those in Jewish neighborhoods, have
been most cooperative in connection with Jewish Book Month
exhibits. Many have sponsored lectures, issued lists of current
Jewish books, and in other ways called attention to the Judaica
on their shelves.
The broad gamut of Jewish Book Month activities is reflected
in the following listing culled from reports received by the Coun-
cil: exhibits and portable displays of modern and rare books,
manuscripts, art works; lectures, sermons, discussions, symposia,
panel discussions; book reviews, meet-the-author, author-meets-the-
critic, receptions to authors; story hours, plays, pageants, dramatic
readings; radio and television broadcasts; displays in department
and book stores; book presentation ceremonies in Jewish and
public libraries; essay, book review and book poster contests;
Yiddish and Hebrew evenings; Israeli programs; literary anni-
versary celebrations; something for all age groups—children’s and
teenagers events, special ladies’ days; library dedications; work-
shops for librarians and for program chairmen.
An activity meriting special mention is the book fair. The
number of book fairs with programs concentrating on book sales
is constantly growing. Following an outstanding pattern created
by the Detroit Jewish Community Center, they have attracted
large audiences and resulted in substantial purchases. Small or-
ganizations frequently encounter difficulty in obtaining from
publishers books on consignment for resale but most publishers,
taking full advantage of Jewish Book Month, have filled hun-
dreds of requests annually for catalogs, price lists and book
jackets. I t is especially gratifying to note that many of the pro-
grams initiated during Jewish Book Month are being continued
throughout the program season.
It is evident that there is complete acceptance of this event
throughout the length and breadth of our country. Jewish Book
Month is generally recognized as a new addition to the red letter
days in the Jewish calendar. It comes each year as a welcome
friend bringing an invigorating and refreshing touch to Jewish
community life. Created by American Jewry, Jewish Book Month
has expanded into a literary instrumentality which brings Jewish
cultural renewal and inspiration to communities large and small,
to Jewish groups whatever be their interpretation of their heritage.
