The Council’s exhibit of 150 recently published books of Jewish
interest by American authors attracted considerable interest. The
books were selected by our Library Committee, consisting of
foremost American Jewish librarians.
In connection with the fair Dr. Sol Liptzin, a past president
of the Council, arranged a public meeting co-sponsored by the
Librarians Association of Jerusalem and the Association of Amer
icans and Canadians in Israel. Lesser Zussman, executive director
of the Jewish Publication Society of America, and Dr. I. Edward
Kiev, librarian of the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of
Religion in New York, were the Book Council’s representatives at
the Fair and addressed this meeting on the subject of Jewish book
publishing in the United States. Dr. Liptzin, who chaired this meet
ing, spoke on the radio and wrote a feature article for
The
Jerusalem Post
on the books in the Council’s exhibit.
Annual Meeting
The Council’s annual meeting took place on Sunday, May 4,
1969, at the Park Avenue Synagogue in New York City. Dr. Judah
Nadich, Council president, chaired the meeting and delivered a
report on the highlights of the year’s activities. Citations of merit
were presented to fourteen libraries by Dr. I. Edward Kiev on
behalf of the Council’s Library Committee.
Dr. Solomon Grayzel, a past president of the Council and for
mer editor of
In Jewish Bookland
and the
Jewish Book Annual,
presented special citations to Dr. Mortimer J. Cohen and Dr. A.
Alan Steinbach on the occasion of their seventy-fifth birthdays
and in grateful appreciation of their untiring and loyal service
to the Council. Both have served as the Council’s president.
Dr. Cohen was the first editor of
In Jewish Bookland
and
Dr. Steinbach has been its editor since 1962; the former was also
editor of the
Jewish Book Annual
and the latter is the editor from
1956 to date. The meeting joined in expressing the prayerful hope
that they will for many years continue as inspiration to the People
of the Book.
The main feature of the annual meeting was the presentation
by Dr. Nadich of the literary awards. The meeting concluded with
the traditional reception in honor of the award winners and of
the citation recipients.
