25th anniversary of death. Born in Sudilkov,
Russia, in 1880, died in Starlake, N. Y., May 22, 1946. A Reform
rabbi in Brooklyn, he edited for many years the popular weekly
American Hebrew.
He is best remembered, however, as the editor
of the
Universal Jewish Encyclopedia,
the 10 volume reference
work published between 1939 and 1943.

100th annversary of death. Born in
Zolkiew, Poland, in 1800, died in Vienna, May 19, 1871. Having
received both a Jewish and a general education, he was uniquely
qualified to render classic poetry into Hebrew, in which genre he
published numerous works. He also edited the Hebrew text of
the Bible for the British Bible Society, which has been reprinted
many times.

1896.
As professor of American Jewish history and
director of the American Jewish Archives at the Hebrew Union
College in Cincinnati, he has made outstanding contributions to
research in this field. His voluminous writings have brought other-
wise inaccessible documents and autobiographies of American
Jews to a wider reading public.

70th birthday. Born in Bershad, Russia, April
5, 1901. In Palestine since 1921, he was among the founders of
the settlement Kfar Witkin. Besides Hebrew novels and children’s
stories, he also wrote about Joseph Witkin, after whom his settle-
ment was named.

educational director of the United Synagogue of America. He has

100th anniversary of death. Born in Triest,
Italy, in 1790, died there August 22, 1871. A cousin of Samuel
David Luzzatto, the celebrated Italian Jewish scholar, she studied
with him and later on began to write Hebrew poems, something
quite unusual for someone in her surroundings. After her death
a collection of her poems were published and reprinted in Israel
in 1943.

Poland, December 8, 1901. In Palestine since 1936, he has been an
official of the Israeli Ministry of Education and is one of the
editors of the Hebrew encyclopedia of education. Most of his
works are concerned with the problems of education and with
making available the latest in educational theory to the Hebrew
reader.
