Judaica Americana, Books and the Holocaust, Love of Books,
Makers of Books, From One Language to Another, Treasure
Houses of Books and Bibliophilic Sidelights. The introduction
was written by Dr. A. Alan Steinbach, editor of the
Jewish Book
Annual
and the preface by Dr. Judah Nadich, the Council’s presi
dent. The articles were selected by Philip Goodman, the Council’s
executive secretary.
A Book List for the Jewish Child
was a cooperative undertaking
involving a number of people. The list includes 603 in-print
books, fully annotated, of which 215 titles marked with an asterisk
are recommended by a group of six librarians who reviewed the
manuscript.
A revised and updated bibliography entitled
Selected Paper-
bound Books of Jewish Interest
was prepared by Louise Renee
Rosenberg from a preliminary comprehensive listing of 750 in
print Jewish paperbacks. The members of the Council’s library
committee selected 240 books to be included in the list.
Sephardic and Oriental Jewry: Selected Reading Lists of Books
in English
was a joint effort of Prof. Herman P. Salomon of the
Sephardic Studies Program of Yeshiva University, Prof. Walter J.
Fischel of the University of California, Marcia Drezon of the
American Jewish Committee, and the members of the Council’s
library committee. This bibliography was issued at the request of
JWB’s Jewish Music Council, to be used in connection with the
theme of Jewish Music Festival—“Music of the Sephardic and
Oriental Jews.”
In anticipation of the forthcoming observance of the 25th anni
versary of the State of Israel, the Council commissioned Hannah
Grad Goodman to prepare a manual entitled
Progra?nming on
Israel with Books.
It includes suggestions for programming for
organizations, book projects for children and youth activists, sug
gestions for dramatizations and arts and crafts. Also issued in con
junction with Israel’s anniversary was a selected list of books on
Israel prepared by Sylvia Landress, director and librarian of the
Zionist Archives and Library. This bibliography appears in this
issue of the
Jewish Book Annual.
Other publications of the Coun
cil were revised and reprinted to meet on-going needs.
Some of the above publications were prepared under the super
vision of the Council’s Program Materials Committee, under the
chairmanship of David M. Kleinstein. Most of the bibliographies
were reviewed by the Library Committee, of which Abraham
Berger serves as chairman.
