a series which will guide the layman toward a deeper underĀ­
standing of the Five Books of Moses from which he hears readings
regularly in the synagogue. This project is funded by a private
grant, and the first volume will soon be in print.
Featured among the publications for adult readers are works
by the eminent Jewish historian Cecil Roth, Rabbi Solomon B.
Freehof and Rabbi W. Gunther Plaut. Among the latest of such
publications is, appropriately enough, the definitive and eloquent
biography of the founder of the Union of American Hebrew
Congregations written by the late Rabbi James G. Heller, who
was for many years the rabbi of the Isaac M. Wise Temple in
Cincinnati. It is entitled
Isaac M. Wise; His Life, Work and
It documents the theme of this brief review of the
Union as publisher, namely, that with the establishment of the
Union of American Hebrew Congregations, a new era opened for
American Jewry, and a new chapter was begun in the history of
all Israel.
