the Basel Program as saying “Zionism aspires to create a publicly
guaranteed homeland for the Jewish people in the Land of
Israel.” The Basel Program speaks not of the “Land of Israel”
but of “Palestine.” So we are reminded tha t a word once sacred
to Zionists had come to be malodorous in their nostrils. (Stu­
dents of the Bible will recall how the name of one of the sons of
Saul is changed from Ish-baal to Ish-bosheth.) One wonders what
will be acceptable by the time the next edition of the
Britannica
appears; one even hopes that an atmosphere of peace will take
the contention out of such matters.
