Recognizing that without reference to the impact of books
there can be no meaningful celebration of the American Revolu
tion Bicentennial, and that without reference to books dealing
with American Jewish life there can be no meaningful Jewish
programming related to the Bicentennial, the Book Council
initiated in 1974 plans for its participation. As a result of this
early start, the Council was able to have available for distribution
early in 1975 basic resources on American Jewish life, which are
listed above. The theme for the 1975 Jewish Book Month was
set as “The Jewish Book in America." An attractive poster was
made available featuring the Liberty Bell with the quotation
from the Book of Leviticus, “Proclaim Liberty Throughout the
Land Unto All the Inhabitants Thereof.” Plans were made for
this volume of the
Jewish Book Annua l
to include considerable
material related to the Bicentennial. Local organizations and
communities were urged to concentrate their programs during
the coming year on this great historic event in American life.
