JEWISH BOOK ANNUAL
OFFICERS AND EXECUT IVE BOARD MEMBERS
Mrs. Charles Schwartz, dedicated New York communal leader
who has devoted more than twenty years to promoting an in
terest in Jewish books, was elected the first woman president of
the Jewish Book Council, succeeding Dr. Eugene B. Borowitz.
Until her elevation to the presidency she had been a vice-
president. She is a vice-president of the National Women’s League
for Conservative Judaism and chairman of its Bookshop, Library
and Publications Committee. Committed to the idea that Jewish
institutions should have Reading Rooms where persons of all
ages can come to read Jewish books, magazines and newspapers,
she was the founder of the Charles and Bertie G. Schwartz
Reading Room and Library of Congress House in New York,
headquarters of the American Jewish Congress. With her late
husband, who was a prominent New York attorney, Mrs. Schwartz
co-authored
A Modern Interpretation of Judaism: Faith Through
Reason
, reissued as a paperback jointly by Schocken Books and
Women’s League for Conservative Judaism. She is membership
chairman of the Association of Jewish Libraries and a board
