The members of the Library Commitee are: Abraham Berger,
Dr. Leonard Gold, Dr. Isidore S. Meyer and Dr. Menahem
Schmelzer.
N A T IONA L JEWISH BOOK AWARDS CEREMONY
The annual presentation meeting of the National Jewish
Book Awards was held on Sunday, June 26, 1977, at the Park
Avenue Synagogue. T he ceremony was opened by Dr. Sidney
B. Hoenig, who reported on the revitalization of the Council in
the past year and welcomed the new Director, Mrs. Sharon
M. Strassfeld.
Mr. Daniel Rose, president of the National Jewish Welfare
Board, brought cordial greetings. The library citations were
presented by Dr. Isidore S. Meyer. Citations and a total of
$4,000 were presented to the award winners selected by the
eight panels of judges.
Dr. Hoenig made reference to the passing of Ms. Sulamit
Ish-Kishor, author of many juvenile books who had received the
Juvenile Award in 1963 for
A Boy of Old Prague
and again
in 1971 for
The Mas ter of Miracle: A New Nove l of the Golem.
Mention was also made of the 25th anniversiary of the
Lador
series of Hebrew reading materials, edited by Mr. Elchanan
Indelman. I t had been established by Dr. Azriel Eisenberg,
former director of the Board of Jewish Education. A special
resolution of commendation had been passed by the Executive
Board of the Council to mark this accomplishment.
Mr. Harold Arian introduced the new Director, Mrs. Sharon
M. Strassfeld, who delivered a message. Following the formal
program a reception was given in honor of the awardees. The
hostesses were Mrs. Isidore S. Meyer, Mrs. Ann W. Hoenig, Mrs.
Hava H. Bader and Miss Gertrude Herschler.
JERUSALEM BOOK FAIR
Th roughou t the years the Council encouraged participation
in the International Book Fair and thereby stimulated Ameri­
can publishers to display their wares in Jerusalem. The Council
was thus the pioneer in this effort. In time, the publishers
assumed full control of the exhibition and accordingly the Coun­
cil became only a coordinator. This year it was felt that it was
