MORR IS J. KAPLUN MEMOR IAL AW A RD
Moshe Sheinbaum presented the Morris J. Kaplun award for
a book on Israel. Mr. Sheinbaum is the head of Shengold Pub­
lishers and a member of the Council’s Executive Board.
The judges included Prof. Isaiah Friedman, former winner
of this award for his book
The Quest ion of Palestine, 1914-1918,
British-Jewish-Arab Relat ions,
Isaiah L. Kenen, former executive
director of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee and
editor and publisher of
Near East Repo r t ,
and Mrs. Sylvia
Landress, director of the Zionist Archives and Library.
They were unanimous in their choice of Dr. Howard M. Sa­
char for his book entitled
A History of Israel from the Rise of
Zionism to Our Time ,
published by Knopf.
Dr. Sachar has taught extensively in the fields of Modern
European, Jewish, and Middle Eastern history and is currently
professor of history at George Washington University. He lived
in the Middle East for a number of years and was the founder
as well as the director of Brandeis University’s H ia tt Institu te
in Jerusalem. His previous published works include:
The Course
of Modern Jewish His tory. The Emergence of the M idd l e East
and
Europe Leaves the Midd le East.
A History of Israel
is a comprehensive work designed for
a widely based audience. I t makes solid claim to being a work
of scholarship, yet is comprehensive and eminently suitable for
the lay person interested in Israel and the history of Israel.

Mrs. Ethel Cohen presented the award for a book on Jewish
thought. Mrs. Cohen is an outstanding Jewish communal leader
who has devoted her energies to helping the Jewish community
of the United States and Israel.
