still in the very early years of its development. I t is modestly
housed in a former dwelling, and operated under a ra ther
limited budget by a small staff. Its library, basically the personal
collection of Israel’s th ird President, is just beginning to grow.
And it does not, by deliberate policy, publish any monographs.
In fact, the
M erka z
is meticulously faithful to its avowed pu r­
pose—the furtherance of the study of Jewish History at all
levels from secondary school pupils and teachers through in­
terested laymen, doctoral candidates and professional historians.
As stated in the Hebrew version of its purposes, i t seeks to
“deepen the consciousness of history” among those whom it
serves.
T he methods adopted for achieving these goals are several.
First and foremost is the preparation and publication of four
kinds of tools for use in advanced study and research:

(Issues or T op ics) . These are annotated collec­
tions of selected essays on one particular aspect of Jewish his­
tory, so tha t the scholar has at his finger-tips the best tha t has
been said on the subject up to now. Some idea of the range of
subjects the
M erka z
can be expected to deal with may be gathered
by mentioning two of the topics already listed in the catalogue.
“Jews an d Juda ism as V iew ed by the H e l len is tic W o r ld ”
is a
collection of essays edited and introduced by Menahem Stern;
“Jew ish Im m ig ra tion to Am er ica”
is a similar collection prepared
by Aryeh Goren.

T he name speaks for itself; and so
does the importance of such an instrument for study and re­

This rubric consists of photo reproductions
or translations (into Hebrew) of historical material out-of-print
or hard-to-find. An example of reproduction is Jacob Emden’s
eighteenth century
Sefer Sh imush ,
important for the history of
the Frankist movement in Poland. An example of translation is
the 1827 work by Joseph Salvador
