JEWISH BOOKS IN REV IEW
In September of this year, a new publication entitled
Jewish
Books in Review
was initiated to take the place of
Jewish Book-
land.
Dr. Eugene B. Borowitz served as editor of the initial
three issues and was instrumental in evolving the new design,
the editorial policy and the more up-to-date nature of the pub-
lication .The new innovations included feature articles in each
issue, a “Re-Discoveries” column which brings to the attention
of the public already published books that deserve more atten-
tion, as well as a listing of all the recently published volumes
of Jewish interest.
N A T IO N A L JEWISH BOOK AWARDS CEREMONY
The annual presentation meeting of the National Jewish
Book Awards was held on Sunday, June 4, 1978, at the Park
Avenue Synagogue. The presentation was chaired by Dr. Sidney
B. Hoenig, president of the Jewish Book Council.
Mr. Daniel Rose, honorary president of JWB, brought cordial
greetings. Mrs. Judah Nadich brought greetings on behalf of the
host congregation and Mrs. Sharon M. Strassfeld spoke on the
work of the Jewish Book Council.
This year, a breakthrough was made in solidifying the rela-
tionship between publishers and the JWB Jewish Book Council.
Special awards were prepared for the publisher of each award-
winning volume, and the publishers arranged to have editors
present to accept these awards on their behalf.
In addition, Mr. William Epstein assumed the leadership in
arranging publicity for the awards. Thus, every major publisher
took out an ad in the New York Times on the day following
the awards. In addition, an interview was arranged with Mr.
Thomas Lask, an editor at the New York Times, and a column
on the Book Council appeared on Friday, June 16, 1978. The
JWB Jewish Book Council owes a debt of gratitude to its new
vice-president William Epstein for his efforts to publicize the
work of the Council.
