Mr. John Moore, editor-in-chief of Columbia University
Press, accepted both the award to Columbia University Press,
as well as the award on Dr. Heller’s behalf.
LEON JOLSON AW ARD
The Leon Jolson National Jewish Book Award for a book on
the Holocaust is presented annually by Leon Jolson, a survivor
of the Warsaw ghetto with a strong interest in Holocaust
literature.
The judges for this award were Prof. Yaffa Eliach, of Brook-
lyn College, Dr. Nora Levin, of Gratz College, and Dr. Hillel
Seidman, noted journalist.
The judges chose to present the award to Terrence Des Pres
for his volume,
The Survivor: An Anatomy of L ife in the Death
Camps,
published by Oxford University Press.
Mr. James Raimes of Oxford University Press was present
to accept our certificate of honor on the publication of this
National Jewish Book Award winner.
Terrence Des Pres was born in Illinois and received his Ph.D.
from Washington University. He is a junior fellow of the Har-
vard Society of Fellows as well as a Fellow of the National
Humanities Institute.
The Survivor
is a thoroughly researched volume which seeks
to investigate and analyze life in the death camps.
FRANK AND ETHEL S. COHEN AW ARD
The Frank and Ethel S. Cohen National Jewish Book Award
for a book on Jewish thought was presented by Mrs. Cohen,
Jewish communal leader.
The judges for this award were Rabbi Ludwig Nadelmann,
of the Jewish Reconstructionist Foundation, Dr. Ernst Simon,
of the Hebrew University, and Dr. Seymour Siegel, of the Jewish
Theological Seminary.
Their choice for the award was Dr. Raphael Patai for his
volume,
The Jewish M ind ,
published by Charles Scribner’s
Sons.
