The Harry and Florence Kovner Memorial National Jewish
Book Award for Poetry was presented by Moshe Sheinbaum.
This year the presentation was made for a volume of Hebrew
poetry.
The judges for this award were Professor Milton Arfa, of
New York University, Dr. Jacob Kabakoff, of Lehman College,
and Dr. Hayim Leaf, of Yeshiva University.
They were unanimous in making the award to T. Carmi for
his volume,
El Eretz Aheret
(To Another Land), published by
the Dvir Company of Tel Aviv.
T. Carmi was born in New York and studied at the Columbia
University Graduate School. He was a visiting fellow at the
Oxford Center for Postgraduate Hebrew Studies and served as
editor of
Ariel.
He has numerous publications and translations to his credit
and was awarded the Shlonsky Prize for Poetry, the Brenner
Prize for Literature, as well as the Prime Minister’s Award for
Creative Writing.
El Eretz Aheret
is a collection of poetry evocative of moving
images with a particularly lyric tone.
Gabriel Preil, a leading poet and himself a winner of the
National Jewish Book Award, accepted the award on Mr. Car-
mi’s behalf.
