1979 National Jewish Book Awards
of the JWB Jewish Book Council
FRANK AND ETHEL S. COHEN AWARD
The judges for this award for a book on Jewish thought were
Milton Himmelfarb, co-editor of the
American Jewish Year Book,
Dr. Arthur Hyman, professor of philosophy, Yeshiva University,
and Dr. David Wolf Silverman, professor of Jewish philosophy,
Jewish Theological Seminary.
They were unanimous in their decision to present the award to
Dr. Robert Gordis for his volume
Love and Sex: A Modern Jewish
Perspective,
co-published by Farrar, Straus & Giroux and the
Women’s League for Conservative Judaism, as well as for his
entire output in the fields of biblical scholarship and contempo­
rary thought.
In 1978, two other books by Dr. Gordis were published:
The
Book of Job: Commentary, New Translation and Special Studies
and
Understanding Conservative Judaism.
GERRARD AND ELLA BERMAN AWARD
The judges for this award for Jewish history were Dr. Martin A.
Cohen, professor of history, Hebrew Union College-Jewish Insti­
tute of Religion, Dr. Henry L. Feingold, professor of history,
Bernard M. Baruch College, Dr. Jane S. Gerber, assistant profes­
sor of history, Graduate School of the City University of New
York, and Dr. Monty N. Penkower, associate professor of history,
Touro College.
The judges chose Dr. Salo W. Baron for his cumulative contri­
butions to Jewish historic research and thought. Columbia Uni­
versity and the Jewish Publication Society of America are among
