the publishers of his many volumes of Jewish history.
Dr. Baron has been called “dean of American Jewish scholars.”
He is professor emeritus at Columbia University, and is the
author of 16 volumes of “A Social and Religious History of the
Jews,” which is considered a landmark in the field of Judaica.
Professor Hyman Grinstein, one of Dr. Baron’s early pupils at
Columbia University, accepted the citation for him.
RABBI JACOB FREEDMAN AWARD
The judges for this award for an English translation of a Jewish
classic were Dr. Leonard Gold, chief, Jewish Division, New York
Public Library, Dr. Menahem Schmelzer, librarian, Jewish
Theological Seminary, and Dr. Esra Shereshevsky, professor of
Hebrew and Near Eastern Languages, Temple University,
Philadelphia.
The judges selected Professor William M. Brinner for his trans­
lation of Nissim Ben Jacob Ibn Shahin’s
An Elegant Composition
Concerning Relief After Diversity,
published by Yale University
Press. Dr. Brinner is professor of Near Eastern studies at the
University of California at Berkeley.
Rabbenu Nissim, of the Tunisian city of Kairouan, was one of
the greatest Talmudic scholars of the 11th century. He begins his
collection of stories by saying that he wrote this work at the
request of a relative to console him after the loss of a son. The tone
of the work as a whole, however, is as though he was writing to the
members of his entire community to strengthen their faith in
their ancestral religion. For centuries the work circulated in He­
brew throughout the Jewish world and its tales became part of our
literary heritage.
CHARLES AND BERTIE G. SCHWARTZ AWARD
The judges for this award for a Jewish juvenile were David C.
Gross, author and columnist, Mrs. Libby M. Klaperman, juvenile
author, and Mrs. Marcia Posner, librarian, Shelter Rock Jewish
Center.
The judges decided to give this award to Irena Narell for her
book
