Finally, one should note tha t no t all works in Jewish theology
written du r ing the 1970s focus on the Holocaust. Besides Jacobs’
and Cohon’s aforem en tioned works, one may note, fo r example,
David Novak’s two-volume work, Law
and Theology infudaism

1,1974; vol. 2,1976), which explores the relationship between the
assum p tion s o f Jew ish theo logy and th e ir crystalization in
halakhic decision-making. Along these lines, one must mention
Louis Jacobs’ extensive survey o f theological topics discussed in

PHILOSOPHY
T he publication o f the
Encyclopedia Judaica
(1972) spawned a
num ber o f derivative volumes. For example, articles in the
Ency­
clopedia Judaica
on Jewish philosophy and Jewish philosophers
were collected and issued as a separate volume,
Jewish Philosophers
(1975), edited by Steven Katz. This volume serves as a good
survey and overview o f Jewish philosophy from the ancient
period to the contemporary era.
Foremost among historians o f Jewish philosophy writing in the
English language was the late H arry Wolfson. T he year before his
dea th (1973), Wolfson published a collection o f essays entitled
Studies in theHistory ofPhilosophy and Religion, Vol. 1.
Because o f the
efforts o f some o f Wolfson’s devoted disciples, Wolfson’s literary
ou tpu t con tinued after his death .
Studies in the History ofPhilosophy
and Religion, Vol. 2
(1977) deals preponderan tly with medieval
Jewish philosophy as does his
The Philosophy of the Kalam
(1976).
As Wolfson’s works often addressed themselves to the responses
o f Jew ish medieval ph ilo sophers to medieval philosophical
trends, Jacob Agus’
Jewish Identity in an Age of Ideologies
(1978)
explores responses o f m ode rn Jewish thinkers to ideological chal­
