LOUIS SIMPSON:
A few words about my background seem called for: I was born
in Jamaica in the British West Indies of a Jewish mother and
Gentile father. When I was growing up I did not know that I was a
Jew, and knew nothing of Jewish life and culture. At the age of
seventeen I emigrated to the United States, came to know my
mother’s family, and understood that I was Jewish.
