thermore, Hannah Berman’s translations of GETSL (Getzel) and
GRINS OYF ShEVUOS (Greens for “Shevuos”) remain the only
ones thus far available in English.
ORIGINAL SOURCES
A 28-volume American edition (the FOLKSOND OYSGABE)
of Sholom Aleichem’s Yiddish works published posthumously
(1917-1923) has been the source for most English translations.
Although entitled ALE VERK (Complete Works) the set at 28
volumes remained incomplete.11 Forty volumes had been pro
jected.
There are about 230 English titles in this current list repre
senting fewer originals, since many pieces have been translated
two or three times (for example, Benny’s Luck, The Dreydl, and
The Spinning-Top are three translations of DOS DREYDL).
Considering that there are well over 300 Yiddish titles by Sholom
Aleichem,12 there must be well over 100 untranslated originals.
Fortunately, most are now available.
Many works absent from the FOLKSFOND OYSGABE11 are
found in rare volumes reproduced on microfiche transparen
cies.13With that, a critical task of retrieval and preservation has
been accomplished under Chone Shmeruk’s editorship and in
consultation with Dina Abramowicz.
Titles of English translations of material found in sources other
than the FOLKSFOND OYSGABE are: An Agent (AN AGENT,
1904); The Four-Faced Rabiner14 (DER FIR-PENIMDIKER
RABINER, 1904); Everybody’s For Us15 (YEDER FAR UNDZ,
