o f th e ch ron ic les” is sim ilar to th a t o f ten app lied to the kings
o f J u d a h an d Israel, o f whom it is said: T h e o th e r even ts and
acts “a re re co rd ed in th e book .”

language , such as th a t in Neh . 3:5: “I fou n d the genealogical

acts. D.S. S ieg fried , in his comm en ta ry , quo tes E d u a rd M eyer’s
op in ion th a t th e w r ite r had a list o f all the family heads o f
the Priests an d Levites fo r the en t ire Persian pe r iod , a r ra n g e d
acco rd ing to th e nam es o f th e h igh p riests and th e ir years o f
service. Since th e list inc ludes u p to Darius II I (358-338), it
can be assum ed th a t it was p re p a r e d in the days o f A lexande r
the G rea t as a review o f th e p e r iod o f Persian ru le over Ju d e a .
However, this is no t the case. J o h a n a n son o f Eliashib, with
whom the list conc ludes , served as h igh p ries t d u r in g the reign
o f Darius II (443-404). In a le t te r from E lph an tin e d a ted 408
th e re is m en tion o f a p rev ious le tte r th a t was sen t to “Jo h a n a n
the h igh p r ie s t.” T h e r e fo r e , the w riting o f the above -m en tioned
book o f th e ch ron ic les c an n o t be advanced to the G reek con ­
