Jewish Book Month 1987 was observed from November 16th
to December 16, 1987 and program materials sales broke last
year’s record high. The Book Council distributed a kit, con­
sisting o f two posters and two bookmarks,

and a “ List o f Books for a Jewish Book Fair.” Both posters
and bookmarks were designed and illustrated by Devis Grebu,
who has earned an international reputation as a painter, ed­
itorial page cartoonist and illustrator. He is a regular contrib­
utor to the
New York Times
and the
International Herald Tribune.
Jewish Book Month will be celebrated from November 4th
to December 4th, 1988. The children’s poster was designed by
paper sculptor Bob Shein, who has created a whimsical, brightly
colored sculpture o f children enjoying biblical stories. The adult
poster was designed by Jacqueline Chwast and is a sophisticated
papercut expressing the pure joy o f reading books.
In addition to our kit, we will publish a revised and expanded
edition o f both
Building Your Home Jewish Library
and
Large-Type
Books of Jewish Interest.
NAT IONAL JEW ISH BOOK AWARDS CEREMONY
The 39th National Jewish Book Awards ceremony was held
on June 2, 1988 at the Buttenwieser Auditorium o f the 92nd
Street Y. This year’s event attracted a record crowd o f over
400 people. The awards were presented by representatives o f
the judges panel and the author acceptance speeches were par­
ticularly moving. The evening was even more exciting than usu­
al because o f Dr. Chaim Potok’s acceptance speech on behalf
o f the Jewish Publication Society for its Centennial Citation.
A lively reception followed.
LIBRARY AND PUBL ICATIONS COMM ITTEE
At the National Jewish Book Awards Ceremony, Dr. Leonard
Gold, chairman o f the Library Award Publications Committee,
presented citations to those libraries which met criteria estab­
lished by the Council:
