Moshe Kulbak, Leib Kvitko, and Solomon Mikhoels, for whom
the Jewish culture center in Moscow has just been named.
With all our present-day activities we still are in debt to the
more distant past. Aaron ben Moses Teomim in the 17th cen
tury prepared a Haggadah commentary still in use today. Sol
omon Pappenheim a century later was attuned to the new spirit
of the Haskalah in his poetry and grammatical studies. A gen
eration thereafter, Nachman Krochmal and Solomon Judah
Leib Rapoport recognized that a new understanding of the Jew
ish tradition was needed to make it meaningful to the modern
age.
Such challenges will be ever upon us, and as in the past each
generation will have to meet them.
