Jewish Book Month 1988 was observed from November 4th
to December 4th, 1988 and sales of program materials once
again broke records. The Book Council distributed a kit con
sisting of two posters and one combined bookmark,
Jewish Books
in Review 1988
and a “List of Books for a Jewish Book Fair.”
The children’s poster was designed by Bob Shein who created
a whimsical, brightly colored sculpture of children enjoying bib
lical stories. The adult poster designed by Jacqueline Chwast
is a sophisticated papercut of friends expressing the pure joy
of reading books. In addition, there was included a bonus full-
color commemorative poster by Shraga Weil, in honor of the
Jewish Publication Society’s centennial anniversary.
Jewish Book Month will again be celebrated from November
23rd to December 23rd, 1989. The children’s poster has been
designed by Bob Shein, who has created a humorous watercolor
of children shaking out the leaves of a large book and watching
the Jewish and general characters fly out. The adult poster has
been designed by Bob Frost and is a charming design in the
shape of a Jewish star depicting all types of Jewish people read
ing and enjoying books.
The 40th National Jewish Book Awards ceremony was held
on May 30, 1989 at the Kaufmann Auditorium of the 92nd
Street Y. This year’s event attracted a crowd of almost 500 peo
ple. The awards were presented by representatives of the judges
panels and the author acceptance speeches were particularly
moving. The evening was enhanced by the presence of Israeli
author Aharon Appelfeld and the special anniversary citations
presented to Jason Aronson and Philipp Feldheim Inc.. The
Jewish Book Council was presented with a special commemo
rative citation in honor of the 40th anniversary of the Book
Awards. A lively reception followed.
