other book of his responsa was published posthumously by his
children in Jerusalem. The second work by Rabbi Judah David
Bernstein was entitled
Hilkheta Rabbata Le-Shabat
and was pub­
lished in Brooklyn in 1910.
A work on the potential value of the restoration of the San-
hedrin,
Le-macan Tsiyon Lo Ehesheh,
by Aryeh Leib Friedman,
appeared in New York in 1911. Several years later, in 1915,
Rabbi Nehemiah Mosesohn of Portland, Oregon raised the is­
sues involved in performing autopsies at the National Jewish
Hospital for Consumptives in Denver, and how the permissi­
bility of such a practice might help find a cure for this destruc­
tive disease. His booklet was entitled
She’elah Becad Ha-Hayyim
E l Ha-Metim.
That same year Rabbi Liber Cohen, who was born in Russia
in 1873 and arrived in America in 1911 and who served as
a rabbi first in Memphis and later in New York, published
Hiddushe Havivah.
The volume contained extensive discussions
on the kashrut of unusual birds and geese found both in Europe
and America, and on the permissibility of utilizing a seven-
branched candelabra commonly found in American syna­
gogues.
MEDIEVAL CLASSICS
During the three-and-a-half decades from 1881 to 1917, at
least five classic medieval texts were published in the United
States, in one instance for the first time, and in the other four
in editions with new critical apparatus. We noted in the first
section the appearance of the Hebrew text with an English trans­
lation of the
Sefer Yezirah
by Isidor Kalisch in 1877. During
the period of mass migration two editions of this philosophic
classic were published. Phinehas Mordell was born in Lithuania
in 1861. He arrived in the United States in 1881 and settled
in Philadelphia, where he worked at various trades. In 1895
he published a corrected text of the
Sefer Yezirah,
without com­
mentary. In 1914 he published the text with a very compre­
hensive commentary in English.
A new American edition of a classic study on ethics and mo­
rality and translated from the Italian into Hebrew by Leon Mod­
ena, first appeared in Venice in 1600 and was published in
