URING the year 5705, the Jewish Book Council of America
continued to gain recognition as a permanent national Jewish
agency functioning throughout the year. This achievement was
made possible through the facilities and funds placed at the dis-
posal of the Council by the National Jewish Welfare Board.
JEWISH BOOK MONTH
In May 1945 a conference of representatives of national and
central Jewish organizations was held for the purpose of stimulat-
ing interest in the observance of Jewish Book Month. Representa-
tives of 35 organizations were present and enthusiastically par-
ticipated in the proceedings. The conference urged two concrete
projects to be sponsored by the Council in 1945: the organization
of additional local chapters of the Jewish Book Council in the
large and medium sized communities throughout the country, and
the inauguration of a campaign during Jewish Book Month with
the slogan “Buy and Read Jewish Books.”
As a result of this conference, individual contacts were estab-
lished with major organizations and upon request, assistance was
rendered to them in the development and promotion of their
organizational programs. Several communications were sent to a
mailing list of about 300 national Jewish organizations and central
bodies concerning Jewish Book Month. Among the national and
central Jewish organizations that participated actively were:
B’nai B’rith Youth Organization, National Jewish Welfare Board,
Synagogue Council of America, Women’s Branch of the Union of
Orthodox Jewish Congregations of America, Women’s Division of
the American Jewish Congress, National Council of JewishWomen,
Young Judaea, National Women’s League of the United Syna-
gogue, Mizrachi Women’s Organization of America, Commission
on Jewish Education of the Central Conference of AmericanRabbis
and the Union of American Hebrew Congregations, American
Friends of the Hebrew University, Central Yiddish Cultural Or-
ganization (CYCO), Yiddish Kultur Farband (YIKUF), Zionist
