and three o f its Arab neighbors after the War o f Independence.
Prof. Rabinovich has drawn on recently available Israeli archives
as well as on a wealth o f published sources for his work. At
a moment when Israel is finally engaged in direct negotiations
with Arab participants in a continuing peace process, it is wholly
appropriate that this book should be honored for its compelling
and vivid portrait o f the previous rounds o f diplomacy. With
this work the author has enhanced his reputation as an acute
and outstanding analyst o f diplomatic relations.

The Making of theJewish Middle Class: Women, Family and Identity
in Imperial Germany,
by Marion A. Kaplan (Oxford University
Press)
In
The Making of the Jewish Middle Class,
Marion A. Kaplan
has written a multi-layered work that examines critical aspects
o f modern Jewish life. Skillfully marshalling a broad range o f
sources, Kaplan reconstructs the experiences o f Jewish women
in Imperial Germany; she thereby has made an examplary con
tribution to the emerging field o f Jewish women’s history. More
over, through the prism o f women’s lives, Kaplan illuminates
the nature o f Jewish assimilation and the role o f the family in
the transmission o f Jewish identity — themes o f particular per
tinence to contemporary American Jews.

Freud’s Moses: Judaism Terminable and Interminable,
by Yosef
Hayim Yerushalmi (Yale University Press)
In
Freud’sMoses,
Yosef Hayim Yerushalmi recaptures a major
classic o f world literature as a work o f Jewish thought. Prof.
Yerushalmi’s brilliant analysis o f Freud’s
Moses and Monotheism,
his last major book and perhaps his most controversial, takes
a far different tack from others who have dealt with it, reaching
into the depths o f Freud’s mind and history. His interpretation
o f Moses as Freud’s affirmation o f Jewish identity is original,
provocative, and thoroughly satisfying.
