Painting a Place in America: Jewish Artists in New York 1900-1945,
edited by Normal L. Kleeblatt and Susan Chevlowe (The Jewish
Museum/Indiana University Press)
The documentation o f the creative output o f Jewish artists
associated with the Educational Alliance Art School in New York
City in the first half o f the 20th century is an important conĀ
tribution to Jewish History and Art History and the points
where the two disciplines intersect.
Painting a Place in America
introduces the reader to painters and sculptors who studied or
taught at the Educational Alliance. There they were influenced
both by the major art movements and by their Jewish immigrant
experience. The essays in this collection trace the impact o f each
and together with the reproductions vividly evoke that era.
