and indeed the work of the Council would be impossible. We
are indebted to Dr. Pinkhos Churgin and Moshe Starkman who
for several years served as editors of the Hebrew and Yiddish
sections respectively. To Dr. Solomon Grayzel our heartfelt
thanks for his six years as president of the Jewish Book Council.
His “ Introductions” to the
Jewish Book Annuals
will be missed,
for he had the gift to sum up each volume with interest, precision
and expertness. But, we are reassured by the knowledge that
his counsel and friendship will sustain us in the future. He will
now serve us as editor of
In Jewish Bookland.
We wish to take this opportunity also to welcome Mr. Irving
Edison as the newly elected president of the National Jewish
Welfare Board. W7e earnestly pray that his interest in the Jewish
Book Council, even as that of the outgoing president, Mr. Frank
L. Weil, will help us to grow in stature and usefulness in the years
ahead. The American Jewish community has now come of age.
More than ever its maturity must be reflected in those works of
the spirit that are the crowning glory of a people — Books.
